Weekly Readings
I always find it difficult to gain volunteers, especially with an organization like campus media. I think that people don’t want to volunteer or join these groups because of the time commitment or they feel that they wouldn’t be able to give an adequate amount of time to the organization. Being a leader in an on campus organization, one of the best practices I have found to help gain volunteers is to recognize those people through the process and make sure they know they are appreciated. Another best practice I have realized is to give someone a project that they can start from the ground up and it becomes like their “baby” in the sense that now they want to see this organization succeed even more since they have invested their time so much. These are definitely practices that I think we should use when trying to bring others in to help with campus media!
Weekly Update
This week John and I did a lot with the site. Our goal was to have it at least up and running by alumni weekend and we accomplished that! I helped with the lay out and also by fixing the front page so it doesn't say "Page Not Found." I put a 60th anniversary pdf on the front page and also fixed the Facebook widget so that it went to the correct Facebook page. I also fixed the Facebook page to be linked to the correct WPRK site. I have been trying to attend the WPRK team meetings but it is always during my internship, so I asked Lauren if I could be put on their email list. So, now I'm aware of what goes on in their meetings since I can't attend!

Weekly Updates
This week, John and I worked together to get the website on it's feet. We're still in the process of choosing the best theme for the background/template. He's going to talk to Clark and see if we can make our own custom layout/theme to make viewers more interested and make the overall appearance better. I had asked John when the WPRK weekly meeting is, and it turns out it's either Tuesdays or Thursdays during common hour, and I happen to have my internship starting at 12 both of those days. Hopefully he'll keep me informed about what goes on in those meetings so that I can help with new ideas and bettering the website.

Weekly Updates
Since it was spring break, I didn't do too much in regards to the site. However, what I did do was create my own WordPress account and become an admin to the WPRK site. I also looked around the actual WordPress site and went through the "set up" steps about how to make sure your WordPress account can be the best it can. This week, my group and I will be doing more toward our campus outreach goal and I will be working with John to do more to the site, especially since we have a big WPRK event coming up in April.
Weekly Readings
After reading Filak and Reinardy's article "College Newspaper Advisers, Controversial Topics, and Willingness to Self-Censor," I thought a lot about the Sandspur's article controversy over the past couple of years. The results of the study on sex was consistent with a Sandspur article several years ago that Dr. Tillmann made my CMC200 class aware of last year. I can see why sex would be a more uncomfortable topic since it is not at the point where it is freely discussed among students, professors, parents, administrators, etc. Maybe one day it could get to that point, but I don’t believe it is there yet.
I was also thinking that the study should have included “race” and “racial topics” since that was the main controversy surrounding an article last year as well. I personally don’t think such controversial topics should be discussed, even though it grabs readers’ attention. I think that there is a way to go about choosing article topics while still remaining “neutral” in the sense that no one’s feelings should be hurt by it.
